Student Success Stories
Return to student success list
For the last 14 years, Eric Sorenson earned a living plumbing, framing, remodeling and green building, as well as a lot of restaurant work - primarily bartending - while pursuing his passions of traveling and climbing.
“Resuming my education after a fourteen year hiatus was daunting, especially during the huge surge in enrollment in the last few years. Persistence and hard work does pay off, and much of what I have learned each term I have been able to apply immediately to new challenges both in and out of school. Both the faculty and student body here are rich with individuals who could succeed at any college or university but choose to enjoy the good life here in Central Oregon.”
Presently, he is very involved with discovering new climbing areas in Central Oregon and developing "first ascents." As vice president for climber advocacy group Central Oregon Rocks and regional coordinator for Access Fund, he works as a liaison between local climbers and land managers to minimize risk, liability and impact on the environment.
Eric is a five-year volunteer for the college’s primary fund-raising event (Meal of the Year), a Wilderness First Responder and a Leave-No-Trace Trainer. He was recently chosen to represent COCC as a member of the All-Oregon Academic Team.
After Eric graduates in June, he will attend Oregon State University-Cascades Campus. He’s planning a career in medicine and is considering primary care or research.
